Millan leads Maine women’s rebound from Friday’s loss to Tulane 42-34 by beating Harvard 76-51

“What a difference a day makes 24 little hours” was the song that the UMaine women’s team might or could have been singing after their complete turn around win defeating Harvard 76-51 at Memorial Gym’s “The Pit” in Saturday’s afternoon consolation game against Ivy League team Harvard.

Maine doubled plus their 34 points in their 42-34 loss to Tulane who lost to Dayton in the Championship game of the Maine Tipoff Tournament in a very close game.

The Bears showed no signs from the results of the Friday nites loss to Tulane as they scored 76 points and still played excellent defense in holding Harvard to 51 points after holding Tulane to 42 points in the loss to the Green Wave.

The only real negative today was that Maine took 30 of their 63 FGA’s as 3’s for 47.6% of their FGA’s where 3’s. On Friday nite they where 3 for 23 of 53 FGA’sand took 43.4% of their fGA’s as 3’s.

SO IT LOOKS LIKE IT MAYBE A ‘LIVE BY THE THREE (Saturday’s win over Harvard) DIE BY THE THREE (Friday’s loss to Tulane) SEASON with still very little inside game to get the kick outs for open threes.

Blanca Millan had a career game for Maine scoring 14 points in each half totaling 28 for the game on near perfect shooting from the floor on 12 for 13 and 4 for 4 from beyond the 3 point arc.

Julie Brosseau added 13 and freshmen point guard Dorr Saar chipped in with 11 and had an outstanding floor game. Harvard had only one player in double figures Madeline Raster with 10.

Junior Tanesha Sutton had 7 points, 7 rebounds and 8 of Maine’s 21 assists.

Maine lead 17-10 at the end of one and lead 42-33 at the half, scoring more points in the first half in then they did for the entire game Friday night of 34. Maine continued to pull away and lead 58 to 40 after 3 quarters outscoring Harvard 16 to 7.

Maine shot 28 of 63 for 44.4% from the floor while holding Harvard to just 23.7% on 14 of 59.

Maine recovered their 3 point shooting touch after going 3-23 last night against Tulane by hitting 13 of 30 for 43.3% and held Harvard to 4-22 for 18.2%.

Maine was 7-8 from the line for 87.5% and Harvard 19-23 for 82.6%.

Maine was out rebounded by Harvard 43 to 35.

Maine had only 7 turnovers and forced Harvard into 12.

Maine had 21 assists on their 28 made field goals to limiting Harvard to just 8.

Maine scored 24 points in the paint and Harvard had 18.

Maine held Harvard scoreless on fast break points while scoring 4 themselves.

Harvard scored 12 points off Maine’s turnovers and Maine had 8 off Maine’s turnovers.

Harvard’s benched had 24 points to Maine’s 22.

The big difference in the win for Maine was their man-to-man defense and their improved shooting from Friday nights contest.

The Maine women are back in action against Bryant College at the Cross Insurance Center on Tuesday, November 14th at 7:00pm.
