David Morris meets successes of Bangor High’s baseball championships headon

David Morris was named the varsity baseball coach at Bangor High School last year after being the assistant baseball coach for Jeff Fahey and helped the Rams to 3 consecutive state class A Baseball championships in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

The former Bangor High School catcher who guided a pitching staff for Bob Kelley’s 1985 unbeaten 20-0 state class A championship team immediately proved Bangor High’s athletic director Steve Vandestine’s decision to hire Dave was a no brainer as it was a very smart move.

Morris who was a 3 year member of the Bangor baseball program from 1982-85 and was the starting catcher his junior and senior years.

He became the third former Bangor high school baseball player and baseball coach to win a state class A baseball championship for Bangor High School. Bob Kelley was the first and Jeff Fahey was the second.

Both played center field for the Rams during their playing days. Morris became the second former Bangor player to win a state championship as a player and then as a coach, with Fahey being the first.

He also has been the head coach for the Bangor Legion Senior Baseball team since 2010. The past 4 years Morris’s Legion team had won 3 of 4 State Legion Championships and finishing runners up once.

His team this year finished 4th in the Northeast regional qualifying tournament to the Legion National World Series.

His work with the Bangor legion program over the years as an assistant coach and head coach has certainly helped the Bangor high school’s baseball teams great success of 4 consecutive state A championships.

Recently I wrote a BLOG about the Legacy of Veteran 8 time state champion and 15 Eastern Maine class A baseball champions, Bob Kelley who Jeff Fahey replaced and who played for Kelley as also did David Morris who replaced Fahey after being his assistant coach for 7 years was an excellent catcher for Kelley.

With Bangor having a tendency to hire coaches from within it was no surprise to me that Morris was the best man for the job after Fahey retired last year.

However, Morris was under some pressure with the success of Kelley and Fahey. However, there was no question in my mind that Morris would do a great job and continue the winning ways for Bangor baseball.

Yes, indeed I was right, as he did as this years edition of the Rams baseball team in his very first year as the head coach immediately won their 4th consecutive class A baseball championship

He couldn’t have done that any quicker.

Then following it up by winning the State’s legion seniors tournament and then finishing 4th in the 8 team New England regional legion tournament.

As good a catcher and coach that David Morris has proven to be, he is an even greater human being. You will not find a more humble individual for all the playing and coaching successes he has had in his baseball career.

He certainly met the pressure of all the past state championship Bangor baseball success, by winning the state A championship his very first year at the helm. It could not have happened to a better person.

The Bangor baseball future is certainly in good hands for the future and it is quite a story that 3 former Bangor High School baseball players have gone on to coach their Alma Mater to state class A baseball championships.

How many high schools anywhere in the country can say they have done that in any sport that their school has?
