Women Newcomers Lead D-1 UMaine to win over D-2 Stonehill

Just like yesterday’s men’s game, newcomers paced the women today in their 74-54 victory over D-2 Stonehill.

3 newcomer combined for 42 points of Maine’s 74, Frosh Laia Sole with 21 points on 10 of 13 shooting from the floor, frosh Fanny Wadling with 11 points and junior transfer Tanesha Sutton, from Duquense with 10  were the leading scorers.

Veteran Sigi Koizar had 8 points and 4 assists.

For Stonehill, Kelly Martin lead all scorers with 25 points.

After a close first  half with Maine up just 33-30 they started to make their  move in the 3rd period to a 50-43 lead.

Then in the 4th quarter they out scored Stonehill 24 to 11.

Maine’s defense was very good seeing that it was the first game of the season and with so many new faces playing for the first time in a Maine uniform.

Maine shot 30 for 61 from the floor for 49.2% to Stonehill’s 22 59 for 37.3%.

Both teams had a tough time from beyond the arc as Maine was just 5 for 20 for 25% and Stonehill was 5 for 18 for 27.8%

Maine was 7 for 13 from the foul line for 69.2% and Stonehill was 5 for 7 for 71.4 %

Maine out rebounded Stonehill 43 to just 28. Maine had 13 offensive boards and 30 defensive. Stonehill had 8 offensive and 20 defensive.

Maine’s overall size was a big factor in the game with 5 Maine players are  at 6’3″, 3 at 6’2″ and 1 at 6’1″ as Stonehill had  2 @ 6″ and 1 @ 6’1″.

Maine had just 11 turnovers but they forced 20 for Stonehill.

Maine had 15 assists and Stonehill 14.

Maine freshmen looked good, as Maine started 3 freshmen along with Sutton and Sigi.

Maine’s next game is when they host their own non-conference tournament on Fri. Nov. 11 when they play Purdue at 5:00pm at the Cross Center.

They play the winner or loser of Villanova-Mississippi State on Saturday, Nov. 12th.
