Were the 6lst BDN All-Maine Selections Overall Talent Level, Size & D-1/D-2 Scholarship Prospects Down A Little

This years Bangor Daily News 61st All-Maine State Selections seems to be down a little in overall talent, size for D-1 or D-2 Scholarships for the past season.

Next year it may not be any stronger as 12 of the first three teams 15 selectees were seniors, 2 were sophomores and only 1 junior.

Also, there were few real big and tall players as none of the select selectees were over 6’6″.

Compared some past seasons All-Mainers, only one this year 6’6″ Andrew Fleming, Oxford Hills/UMaine, a first team selection, is going on to play at the D-1 or D-2 level as of today.

First Teamers 6’3″ Nick Gilpin, Hampden and 6’1″ Tom Coyne, Falmouth both will be attending D-3 Bates College.

3rd teamer 5’10” Jack Tilley from Thornton Academy is going back to Canada to play at St. Mary”s University in Nova Scotia.

6’2″ Jack Lesure who lead Lake Region to the Class B State Championship is going to prep school and will play for his father, veteran successful coach Whit Lesure at Bridgton Academy.

The remaining 7 seniors basketballs futures were not announced in their write ups in the All-Maine Teams last weekend.

Usually by now if they are going to get D-1 or D-2 scholarship offers they would have had to at least made a verbally commitment with the signed letter-of-intent due fairly soon if they were going D-1 or D-2.

Compared to past senior classes that had 6’9″ Nick Mayo, Messalonksee going to D-1 Eastern Kentucky, 6’5″ Kyle Bouchard, Houlton to D-2 Bentley where he joined 6’5″ Keegan Hyland, So. Portland, 6’6″ Tyler McFarland, Camden, 6’7″ Alex Furness, Wells and 6’5″ Zack Gilpin, Hampden/Bridgton Academy.

6’3″ Isaiah Bess, Penquis/Hampden to D-2 Stonehill, 6’8″ Mike McDevitt, Gorham at D-2 Franklin Pierce, 5’9″ Dustin Cole.Falmouth to D-2 Franklin Pierce, 6’5′ Chris Braley Nokomis/Phillips Exeter Prep, D-1 Stonybrook/D-2 St. Anslem, etc. this years class has little size and only 1 scholarshipped player in 6’6″ Andrew Fleming, as only D-1, D-2 and NAIA 1 or 2 offer basketball scholarships.

There doesn’t seem to be any 6’9″ Tom Knight, Dirigo/Notre Dame, 6’7 Sean McNally, Gardner/UMaine, 6’5″ Troy Barnies, EL/UMaine, 6’6″ Garrett Beal, Beals/UMaine, 6’10” Matt Cimino, Falmouth/George Washington (NIT Champs this year), etc. available next year as of right now.

Also with 12 of the 15 All-Mainers being seniors next year’s classes will probably be lead by 5’10” sophomore Terion Moss of State Champion AA Portland, 6’0″ sophomore Taylor Schilroth from state C Champs George Stevens and versatile 6’2″ junior Justin Thompson of Schenck of East Millinocket.

Also, the underclassmen of the 30 honorable mentions should add to that group.

All senior classes are different and run in cycles in regards to talent; size and potential scholarship D-1/D-2 college players.

There probably will be some late bloomers in next years classes and All-State selections. Only time will tell.
