Is Going Undefeated Into the Tourney a Positive or a Negative?

Is going into a tournament is it a positive or negative thing to be undefeated.

Is there more pressure on an undefeated team?

Speaking from experience where in 1968-69 the Orono Red Riots went 22-0 and in 1992-93 the John Bapost Crusaders went 22-0 and both were Class B State Champions, I would say that being undefeated going into the tournament is more of a minus then a plus.

The pressure is on from the get go. YOU ARE THE TARGET AND ALL THE TEAMS ARE GUNNING TO STOP THE UNDEFEATED STREAK.

First, you are undefeated you are probably the number one seed and you are expected to win. If you don’t win then people will ask what happened? You should have won and if you win people may so what you should have won.

Undefeated teams have everything to lose.

1. You lose an undefeated season
2. You lose the tournament or State Championship game And the last game for your seniors
3. You lose the number one ranking

Careful what you wish for, as it is better to win a state championship and have lost in the regular season then it is to go undefeated in the regular season and lose in the post season.

I always felt it didn’t hurt to feel the sting of defeat in the regular season at least once or twice.

Thay way you and your players are reminded that they are not invincible and they also get reminded of the “Taste of Defeat”.

They also rememer that old adage, “on any given night”.
