Maine Maritme Academy Men Upset Husson University 53-51

Maine Maritime Academy Mens Team Upsets Husson University

I am sure on Tuesday Morning a week ago that some college D3 basketball coaches, players and fans in Maine thought they had been a misprint in the BDN, when they read that Maine Maritime Coach Chris Murphy’s Maritimers had upset Husson University 53-51 in a North Atlantic Conference Game at Castine last Monday.

Coach Murphy quiety toils in the small picturesque town of Castine and has been there for many aeasons.

This certainly was one of the biggest wins for the MMA program in a long time, especially seeing that they had been upset by Small Yankee Conference, the University of Maine at Augusta just a short time ago.

In this game against the Husson Eagles, MMA jumped on them very quickly and raced to a 36-13 half-time lead. Holding the high scoring Husson machine to 13 points in 20 minutes is a win in itself.

Getting a big lead early sometimes is very hard, as players are bound to have a little let down and when fatique sets in it is very hard to recover the momentum you have gotten with a big lead.

Also, MMA had to overcome the loss of their top player., Paul Campbell due to injury in the lst half. Also, Coach Murphy knew that Husson was going to come back and make a run and that they did as Husson out scored MMA 37 to 17 in that second half.

It was a game of two halves and MMA was able to hang on after losing that second half. However, holding Husson to just 51 points also was a very strong psycological win for MMA. Husson had just scored 86 points in a game against St. Josephs last week.

MMA is a very young team and this win should give them some confidence that they need to finish the conference schedule the rest of the season.

Coach Murphy was quick to give all the credit for the big upset win to his players and their effort of bouncing back from that disappointing and tough loss to UMA.
