Why Doesn’t Maine Men Play Husson University instead of Fisher College?

Maine’s has a home game coming up with D3 Fisher College of Boston at Alfond. How come they don’t play Husson University?

They certainly would draw better than Fisher, if they are going to play a D3 team.

They play them in exhibition baseball games. Why is Maine playing D3 teams anyway? Is it just to pad their stats like they did last year in demantling the University of Maine at Machias, who last year was not even playing in a NAIA2 league.

They were playing in the Small Yankee Conference, with the Community Colleges in Maine, the U of Augusta, etc. for the first time.

Probably the reason they are not playing Husson University (At least they are a University and not a college anymore) is because back in Coach G’s early career they lost to Husson at Alfond and I don’t believe they ever have played them since.

Playing D2=D3 schools or lower certainly does not help your RPI Rating and the stats should not count to fatten team and individual stats.

I can remember back when Maine played in the state series with Bates, Bowdoin and Colby and the basketball games were very competitive. My how times have changed, except that Maine has still never made it to the big dance regardless what their regular season schedule was.

Their highest finish in the Old Yankee Conference playing UNH, VT, Connecticut, RI and Massachusetts was when they finished 2nd in that Conference in the early sixties. That Conference was certainly alot tougher then the current America East Conference which is rated 23 out of the 31 Conferences as of today.

In fact, 4 of those starters on that team were right from Maine High School Basketball. Wayne Champeon-Greenville, Don Sturgeon and Skip Chappelle-Old Town, Jon Ingals-Bangor and the 5th starter was Larry Schiner of NJ.
