Watching all the players in the NCAA and NIT Tournies dunking, the rule about grasping or grabbing the rim except to protect yourself if you lose your baslance or there is a player directly under you or a player under you and you don’t want to hurt yourself or the other player is no longer the rule to be called a technical foul.
It is only when a player hangs on the rim and swings on it, then it is a technical foul.
However, I have seen several dunks that were missed because players hung on the rim and forced the ball out of the basket, whereas if they had just laid it in they would have scored easily.
Dunking is way over rated unless you are Spud Webb or any other small 5’9″ and under player and Webb was only 5’7″, now that is a real dunk when Spud did it.
The college game today has really become a game of dunks and 3 point shots from teaserland. Intermediate 12′-15′ range jumpers and foul shooting leave a little to be desired percentage wise in many cases.
