Yarmouth Wins State B Boys Championsip with 65-53 Win over Gardner

Both teams in the State Boys B final were 3rd seeded teams in their tournaments but Yarmouth showed they were the better team tonight at the Bangor Auditorium with their first state championship since 1968.

Yarmouth lead by Josh Britten’s 11 first period points before picking up hiis 2nd personal foul with 3:40 to go in the lst period jumped out to a 13-4 lead. However, with Britten on the Bench Gardner lead by Aaron Tolman came back and tied the game at 15 all at the end of the first period. In the second period Britten had 10 point as the Yarmouth lead 35-30 at the half. Briton had 21 ponts in the first half..

In the 3rd period Gardner could only muster 2 field goals for 4 points on 2 for 10 attempts from the floor as they committed 5 tournovers that lead for easy scores for Yarmouth.and Yarmouth raced to a 50-34 lead at the end of three periods.

Gardner managed to cut the lead to 8 once in the 4th period, but had to foul and Yarmouth although outscored 19-15 by Gardner who was lead by Tolmans great second half effort managed to make 8 of 12 foul shot attempts and their last 8 in row foul shots and won going away 65-43.

Gardner had 18 tournovers to Yarmouth’s 8 and Yarmouth got some easy layups off the turnovers and of sending a man off their zone defense for easy layups off missed Gardner shots..

Gardner also had trouble with Yarmouths dribble-drive offense. as Yarmouth got good deep dribble penetration into the lane for some easy scores.

Gardner shot a very respectful 22 of 50 from the floor for 44%, 4 for 7 from 3 point land for 55.6% and 3 for 5 from the line for 60%

The new state B championsn shot 24 for 50 from the floor for 48%, 5 for 12 for 3 point % for 41.7^ and 12 for 20 from the line for 60%.

The real difference in the game was the Gardner turnovers which lead to at least 5 baskets and then they got another 3 on breakaways off missed Gardner shots. Josh Britten lead all scorers with 29 points and teammate Chris Knaud had 14 for Yarmouth. Tolman was outstanding for the Tigers with 28 points and Jake Palmer had 11 for Gardner all in the first half.
