Hampden Survives Late Mt. Blue Rally 46-44 To Win Eastern A Title

Hampden Academy lead by 8-10 points for the most of the entire game and had to survive losing Christian McCue on fouls with about 2:45 to go in the fourth period and a late 4th period rally by the Cougars.

Hampden lead 15-6 25-16 and 36-26 at the end of each period. But Mt. Blue dispite missing crucial foul shots down the stretch managed to tie the game up at 44-44. They did this with a 1-3-1 3/4 and half court trapping zone press that Hampden had trouble with as they made several key bad passes that resulted in turnovers and scores for Mt. Blue.

The game was tied 44 all when Hampden’s Gilpin had a shot blocked on and the ball went out of bounds off Mt. Blue.on the endline with 4.6 seconds left. Hampden called a time out. Mt. Blue set up defensively in a 2-1-2 zone and Hampden’s Ficket slide into the crease at the right block from the left side received the in bounds pass and scored on a layup to put Hampden up 46-44 with 2.2 seconds left.

Mt. Blue called a time out and tried a full court pass but it sailed pout of bounds without any player touching the ball, so the ballmwent back to Hampden at the spot of the throw in. Hampden got the ball in bounds and held on for the win.

Game was not well played by either team. Mt. Blue struggled with their shooting and Hampden  was in foul trouble and lost McCue at a key point in the game on a charge.Big Fred Knight was also in foul trouble.

Hoiwever, Hampden now awaits the winner of the Deering-Bonny Eagle Game next weekend for the A State Title
