DEER ISLE Upsets 2nd High Seeded County Team 67-55

Coach Billings of the Deer Isle-Stonginton Mariners pulled the second consecutive upset of a higher seeded Aroostook County Team by handing the number 2 seed Defending Class D State Champions Central Aroostook 67-55. They upset the 3rd  seeded Washburn in the quarter-finals.

Coach Billings wanted to try to keep the high scoring Panthers in the 50’s and they made that come true as they allowed the Panthers just 55 points, well below their per game scoring average in previous games..

The score was 30-30 at the half and Deer Isle held Central Aroostook to just 6 points in the third period and scoring 17 themselves to take a 47-36 lead. Central Aroostook came back and cut the score to 4 or 5 points in the 4th Quarter, but DI was able to make their foul shoits down the stretch as CA had to foul.

Jr. point guard Sam Grindle led the charge with an outstanding floor game, scoring wise and with assists to his teammates.

Deer Isle now awaits the winner of Katadhin and number 1 seed Jonesport Beals for the championship Game on Saturday..
