Hampden with 2 wins over Mt. Blue during the season faces the Cougars for the 3rd time. Tough to beat a good team 3 times in a season, but Hampden did that by Beating Bangor 3 times to get the the final.
Both teams played good man to man defense, but the edge goes to Hampden in that department. Cam Sennick was kept in pretty much check by EL’s junk defenses. It should be a great match up between him and Big Fred Knight of Hampden in the paint.
McCue had an off nite shooting against Bangor but the Broncos had a 16 point led late in the game until Bangor hit back to back 3’s in the last 20 seconds to cut the winning margin to 10.
Gilpin helped Knight, but Hampden showed that they wanted to go to Knight in the paint and they did very successfully in doing so. Even when EL went man to man Mt. Blue did not go inside to Sennick. Inside game goes to Hampden.
Both team have good athletes, and at times both teams had a tendency to play a little out of control. However ,Hampden seemed to make better basketball decisions.
Defensively Hampden only gave Bangot 31 until they hit those 1 late threes, while Mt. Blue gave up 49 to EL. Defensive edge goes to Hampden.
Key to the game will there be foul trouble for either Knight or Senick? Will they guard each other? Will McCue get his outside and foul shooting going?
If there is no foul trouble for either team then the edge has to go with
Hampden as they showed their stuff when their scoring leader had a tough shooting nite and still were able to manage a win over a Bangor Team that had given them trouble both regular season games.
Mt. Blue was my dark horse favorite and Hampden should be favored because they are 19-1 and seeded number one and have beaten Mt. Blye twice in the regular season.
My pick, Hampden, but I won’t be upset if it is Mt. Blue, nor will I be surprised. Both teams would be excellent representatives in the state game for Eastern Maine A.
