Week of Feb 4-10 Coaches Tip of the Week

Calling Timeouts. Now that players can call timeouts to prevent a jump ball or if they are in the air going out of bounds, do you as coaches want them or you for that matter to waste a time out to prevent a jump ball where you might have had the arrow anyway or tomprevent a violation.

I see this happen game after game and this really is a wase of the 5 timeouts that you have 3 – 60’s and 2 – 30’s.

Calling timeouts in these situatu=ions really is wasting a timeout you might wish you had later in the game. Not calling a  time out in this situation is no different then a turnovrer, violation or missed shot.

I used the following rule for my players about calling timeouts. I was the only won that called timeouts and they knew they were on Red.Light………………………………………………………. which meant they were not to call a timeout under any situations.

Green Light ………………meant they could call a time out under any situations and this was usually at the end of a game situationYou should  them at any break (Time out, beteween quarters)what color the timeouts were on as the huddle broke just to remind them.

This way we always had timeouts left dso that if we needed them late in a close game.
